Sagging Mattress Sales

• As with many retail verticals, 2021 was a very good year for the mattress market as consumers had dollars to spend and inflation was low. According to the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA), total dollar value increased by 14.5% for all mattress products.
• As inflation increased during 2022 and the mattress-buying frenzy moderated, the ISPA reported total unit shipments during Q2 2022 for mattresses and foundations decreased by 13.3%. The average unit price for mattresses increased by 20% and foundations by 9.3%.
• According to the Piper Sandler September 2022 Mattress Retail Survey, mattress sales “improved” during the month, decreasing by 5%, after an 11% decrease during both July and August. The survey also revealed mattress retailers are more optimistic about Q4 sales.
