A Cautious Celebratory Climate for Halloween

• Although there are some indications of a new COVID-19 strain, it’s unlikely to spoil Halloween gatherings. Inflation is more likely to cause some spending reduction based on Deloitte’s forecast of a 10% YOY decrease in spending for the 2023 back-to-school season.
• According to Numerator’s latest Consumer Sentiment Survey (7/15/23), increasing prices continue to be the top concern of all shoppers surveyed: “essential goods & services” at 72%, “gas & fuel” at 61% and “other goods & services” at 58%.
• Despite cautious consumers, a mid-August 2023 analysis from Edward Jones concluded inflation is decreasing. the Fed is unlikely to increase its fund rate during the remainder of 2023 and possibly start to reduce the rate during Q1 2024.
